ABOUT SUMMER SLING
Summer Sling is a program that helps students develop a plan for after high school while building leadership skills among their peers. This year's Summer Sling will be held at the Duval Early Learning Academy, 2106 NE 8th avenue, Gainesville Fl.
Summer Sling will run six-weeks this year. Our program helps students develop a plan for after high school while building leadership skills among their peers. We accept youth in grades 7th through 12th grade. Or program focuses on Career and Exploration and Civic Engagement, enhancing each youth’s opportunity to gain knowledge that can prepare them for a career and lifestyle for success. Participants will visit several colleges, universities, alternative programs and get to go to job sites to get a first-hand view to 90 to 125 different career opportunities to choose from. These careers can be achieved right out of high School, with on-the-job training, vocational training or through a formal education attend a college or university. The youth also learn about Civic Engagement and have conversations with elected officials on civic duties and careers in politics.
There are also lessons and activities throughout the program that help youth to understand and embrace the skills necessary to lead a successful life. The Summer Sling Staff value independence leadership, encouraging the youth to develop qualities such as positivity, creativity, accountability, mindfulness, and to demonstrate these traits among their peers. As a group we cover important communication lessons, such as conflict resolution and teamwork; decision making skills that revolve around career options; and more!
Our goal is for the children to experience personal growth and feel confident in their abilities to become successful adults.
Our Youth (during 2020 Summer) did a special project, making a Rap from our list of "Words to Succeed" we use during Summer Sling each year. The youth wrote & produced the lyrics and Beat Vandal Productions made an original track for them to record over, In-kind!! We were going to the Studio to record as well, but because of the pandemic we were not able to. We only made a practice video. (everyone in this video used COV19 precautions) https://youtu.be/ezUtXsZoOwU
